The Wisconsin Windigo are a Tier II Junior hockey club competing in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), one of the premier developmental leagues in the United States for athletes aspiring to reach NCAA Division I and professional levels. Based in Brookfield, Wisconsin, the Windigo play their home games at The Ponds of Brookfield, a state-of-the-art facility known for its community engagement and dynamic atmosphere.
Formed in 2010, the team originally operated as the New Mexico Mustangs. After two seasons in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, the franchise was granted inactive status by the NAHL. On December 21, 2012, the league announced the franchise had been acquired by the Minnesota Junior Hockey Group and would relocate to Richfield, Minnesota for the 2013–14 season. The franchise would win their first Midwest Division title in the 2020-21 season.
After nine seasons in Richfield, the team was purchased by Copper Island Hockey Club, LLC and relocated to Eagle River, Wisconsin, in May of 2022. The freshly-named Windigo have posted three consecutive regular seasons with 80-plus points. In 2024-25, the team finished the regular season & playoffs with 102 points, winning their first Midwest Division title since relocating from Minnesota in the process.
In 2025, the Windigo was purchased by District 5 Sports Group Hockey Club, LLC and officially moved to their new home in Brookfield, Wisconsin. The team is set to play their home games at The Ponds of Brookfield and will remain in the Midwest Division for the 2025-26 season.
The Windigo name, inspired by a legendary creature from Great Lakes Indigenous folklore, symbolizes strength, resilience, and regional pride…qualities that define the team’s identity.
With elite coaching, a strong organizational foundation, and a deep commitment to player development, the Wisconsin Windigo offer a premier junior hockey experience. Whether you’re a prospective player, billet family, sponsor, or fan, the Windigo represent the future of junior hockey where tradition meets opportunity.
