HEAD COACH JOHN MITCHELL ANNOUNCED NAHL COACH OF THE YEAR

Jul 24, 2025

The Wisconsin Windigo are proud to announce that Head Coach John Mitchell has been named the North American Hockey League (NAHL) Coach of the Year for the 2024–25 season.

In his first year leading the Windigo, Mitchell guided the team to a franchise-best record of 41-14-4, capturing the Midwest Division regular season title and securing the team’s first appearance in the Robertson Cup semifinals. The Coach of the Year award is determined by a vote of NAHL general managers and head coaches across the league.

Under Mitchell’s leadership, the Windigo defeated the Anchorage Wolverines in five games to win the Midwest Division Finals before falling in a tightly contested semifinal series against the Lone Star Brahmas.

“This award is a tremendous honor,” said Mitchell. “To be recognized by my peers—people who understand how tough this league is—means a lot. I’m proud to represent the Windigo and grateful that our organization is being recognized for the success we had this season.”

Mitchell joined the Windigo in May 2024 after serving as associate head coach with the St. Cloud Norsemen. He also spent two seasons coaching in the NA3HL with the Milwaukee Power and brings playing experience as a former NCAA Division I athlete and 2006 National Champion with the Wisconsin Badgers.

The 2025–26 season marks a new chapter for Mitchell and the Windigo, as the team begins its first year in Brookfield, WI under new ownership by District 5 Sports Group Hockey Club, LLC. Home games will now be played at The Ponds of Brookfield, and the organization is excited to deepen its roots in the local community.
