Magicians Weekly – January 13th

Jan 13, 2016

The Magicians (13-16-4) completed a home & home series against the Cloquet Wilderness last weekend, coming up short in two well contested games. With the losses, the Magicians remained stuck in 5th place in the Central Division while falling to 9-points out of first place. Up next for the Magicians is a weekend road trip to North Dakota for two games against the Minot Minotauros (17-15-3).

Weekend Recap

Friday:
The Magicians faced the Cloquet Wilderness at Richfield Ice Arena on Friday night, looking to duplicate the result from the last time the two teams met, a 2-1 victory for the Magicians on December 19th. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Magicians responded with two goals of their own to take a lead heading into the first intermission.  First, it was newcomer Kyle Amundson evening the score with a goal assisted by Kyle Wagner and Peter Karavos to tie the game. Next, it was Kyle Wagner scoring a goal to take the lead assisted by Peter Karavos and Will Ulrich.

After a scoreless second period, the Magicians took to the ice in the third hoping to shut down the potent Wilderness offense for one more period. Unfortunately, Cloquet was able to find the back of the net two times in the final 10-minutes of the game to sneak out of Richfield with a victory. Will Ulrich stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced in the defeat.

Saturday:
On Saturday, the Magicians made the trip to Cloquet for a rematch with the Wilderness at Northwoods Credit Union Arena. Kyle Wagner opened the scoring with his 2nd goal of the weekend assisted by Travis Brown less than two minutes into the game. The Wilderness were able to answer with two goals of their own late in the first to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

In the second period, Kyle Amundson scored his 2nd goal in as many games assisted by Kyle Wagner and Travis Brown to even the score once again. Shortly thereafter, the Wilderness were able to answer with another goal to take the lead again. Another late goal in the third period was enough to finish off the Magicians by a final score of 4-2. Will Ulrich made the start again for the Magicians, stopping 41 of the 45 shots he faced.
