Jun 17, 2015

Joey Matthews signed a tender agreement with the Minnesota Magicians during his 2014-2015 season with the U18 St. Louis AAA Blues. A defenseman from Columbia, Illinois, Matthews has consistently produced as an offensive defenseman throughout his midget hockey career. During the 2013-2014 season with the U16 AAA Blues, he contributed 4 goals and 12 assists.  In his most recent season with the U18 AAA Blues, he played in 28 games and registered 7 goals to go along with 19 assists.

Magicians Head Coach Tom Upton said of Matthews, "Joey was one of the top defensemen in U18 AAA hockey last season. He comes from a great organization in St. Louis where he was the captain of a very successful team. On the ice he has the ability to be a high end skater and knows how to see the ice and create offense from the back end. He is a phenomenal person who is committed to be his best as a person and player and to take his game to the highest level."

Matthews was drafted in the 2015 United States Hockey League (USHL) draft by the Tri-City Storm.  By signing a tender with the Magicians, his rights are secure in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) as well.
