Weekend Recap: Alaskan Road Trip Starts with a Sweep

Oct 22, 2017

Recap:

As the Magicians embarked on an eight-game road trip, their first stop was at the Big Dipper Ice Arena in Fairbanks, Alaska. On Friday night, the Magicians took to the ice against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in front of a packed house for the Ice Dogs’ home opener. The Magic were able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead but Ice Dogs came back to force extra time. No winner was settled in OT and the teams headed to a shootout, where Isaiah Saville made three key saves and Bram Scheerer scored the shootout-winner for the Magicians to give them a 3-2 victory to spoil the Ice Dogs’ home opener.

Saturday night, the Magicians once again got off to a quick start. The Magic scored the first 4 goals of the game. But the Ice Dogs pushed back getting three straight goals from former Magician, Caleb Hite. The Magicians would get a late goal from newcomer Calvin Dybicz to give the Magicians a 5-3 win to complete the sweep over the Ice Dogs. The Magic are currently on a three-game winning streak and are 6-0-1 in their last seven games. The two wins this weekend allowed the Magicians to move up to 3rd in the Midwest Division.

3 Stars of the Weekend:

1st Star Isaiah Saville – The Alaska native came back home and put on a show. Saville was in net for both Magicians’ victories, he had 53 saves and .913 save percentage. He came up big when the Magic needed him the most all weekend long.

2nd Star Cameron Buhl – Buhl tallied 2 goals and an assist on Saturday including the game-winning goal and was a big reason for the Magicians successful weekend.

3rd Star Ethan DeStefani – DeStefani netted two goals on Saturday, including an electrifying breakaway goal where he came out of the penalty box, caught a pass and blew by the Ice Dogs defensemen and fooled the goaltender with a nice move.

Honorable Mention:

Charlie Weiand – 1 goal 1 assist

Calvin Dybicz – 1 goal 1 assist
